A   first  messenger  (e.g.,
   epinephrine) phosphorylates and activates a G-protein.

   This in turn activates adenylyl cyclase to convert ATP to cAMP.
<P>
   cAMP  acts  as  a  second  messenger by activating other proteins in a
   phosphorylation cascade to yield a response.
